How young people can experience the workplace – an exciting project by Open Doors
A project enabling young people to experience a multitude of workplaces returns for its third year this November, aiming to reach over 600 students in East Sussex.
Businesses in ‘Open Doors’ include offices, local landscapes, and large engineering facilities. By opening their doors companies can give students experiences of different ways of working, varying career paths, and the vast multitude of jobs that are available in East Sussex. ‘Open Doors’ aims to boost young people’s career prospects and inspire future career choices.
Running from November 5th to 30th this year, the project run by East Sussex County Council and supported by Skills East Sussex. expects to see over 600 students go out on visits. With already 50 companies signed up we are looking for more representation in the digital sector.
We suggest taking 12 students for between an hour or two, giving them a short tour of your business, and to get the whole team involved to show young people what you do. You can tailor visits to your needs.
Last year 25 companies signed up from galleries to wind farms, with all saying they would take part again. Emily Perrot, marketing manager at BarkWeb, in Eastbourne, said: “We are really pleased to be taking part in Open Doors and look forward to welcoming students into our offices to show them what goes on behind the scenes of a digital agency. We are proud to be able to contribute in this way and provide students with an insight which may inspire them in their future career choices.”
Nick Holdcroft, director at Horlock Holdcroft, in Uckfield, said: “We are delighted to help out our local schools and we see great value in educating students about what lies beyond the school gates. Financial planning is an important part of everyone’s lives, often overlooked by the younger generation, and we want to change that.”
